Ducklander Calls Take on Spinners

Posted by Ducklander Calls on Feb 11th 2021

We talk about spinners a lot, motion wing decoys, mojos or whatever they are called. I prefer to call them spinners. The main questions are usually, do they still work, how many do you use, do you shut them on and off?

Here is my take on spinners, I have been using them since around 1999 ish or so.. whenever they first came out. It's been awhile so maybe I am off a year or so on that date. I have used all different brands over the years and the Lucky Duck Premium Decoys HDi spinners are the best one that has been made IMO. As far as do they work , that is a huge yes, are they as effective now compared to when we first started using them? Yes, in certain conditions. Do I wish they could banned. well no. I think the benefit to waterfowl hunting far out ways any negatives. Waterfowl hunting is hard to learn, expensive and heavy on time. If a spinner helps a dad and son, young guys just starting out or whoever have a better experience and shoot a few more ducks, then they are great tool.

If you are a new to waterfowling the spinner will 100% be one of your best tools.

If you are an experienced waterfowler the spinner is 100% a great tool to have in your bag of tricks.

If you hunt mixed birds, ducks and geese, you need a remote. No spinners on for geese, I personally prefer the spinner low staked as possible when hunting mixed and off to the side of the landing zone in the spread.

How do I like to use spinners? I like to break the hunt down in to a few categories,

Water or Dry Feed:

Dry feed:

I use spinners 100% of the time, I use from 3-30 depending on how hard or soft the X is, or is it just a traffic or pull field.

Hard X, 3-6 spinners is plenty!

Soft X , I like about a dozen spread out in the decoys, some on interment and some on continuous.

Traffic field or the field next to the X (pull field), you really cant have to many spinners IMO. Put them all out.

Water:

If we are on a hard X, I like to leave the spinner out and use water motion decoys, flicker tails and splashers. I just want to look real, and like my buddy Shannon Shields says, "lets make it look and sound like a hunter is not here". That is sound advice!

Soft X, I like 1 spinner and water motion if possible. I know the ducks have been using this piece water, they just didn't use it yesterday. This is kind of a traffic hunt, so I think the spinner helps a lot on these.

Water traffic, I like to go spinner heavy on these. This is a great place for the intermittent cycle. You need to look real and inviting.

Keep in mind this all just my opinion and I am never married to any of it.
