Summertime Restart

Posted by Torrey Walrath on Jul 9th 2021

It has been a few months since our dogs have had the fun of hunting with us. Now that it's summer, it is time to start making sure they are in shape to get multiple safe retrieves in as few as three months from now. Just like many athletes, staying in shape to do the job with no injuries is important.

During the off season, I personally like to start with nice long walks. This gets their legs and joints moving again from the down time. Also, this is a great time to focus on the basics such as heal, sits, stays, and to be steady with people, cars, and other distractions. Running is a great way to really get back into shape with nice cool mornings and evenings. I try to avoid hot humid days as well as hard surfaces like concrete. These situations can do a number to their joints in the long run. If using a grass area, walk the area and look for hazards such as holes, sharp sticks or large rocks. Try to ensure there is a safe area because we know they just want to run and retrieve no matter what is in the way. As the weather warms, I really move to swimming. Swimming helps keep them cool and is easy on the joints. There is no pressure when they are in the water and can really get moving for you.

Short drills in your back yard for 15 minutes two times a day will do a lot. You can work on short back drills, hand signal drills, and stay-steady drills. Try to make these preseason warmups fun and exciting for them, and yourself. Get the family involved! I like to keep wings from previous seasons and have my kids hide them in the yard or on walks. This helps get the nose work in as well as keeps the dog wondering where the next bird is.
